Most of these pictures were taken through a window, with insufficient telephoto and probably insufficient tripod use.\u00a0 Nevertheless, you can tell what kind of bird they are, and for me that is interesting.<\/p>\n

With luck, I\u2019ll update these with better pictures over the summer, especially the hummingbird.<\/p>\n

The broad-tailed hummingbird is my best guess at the identification of this bird.\u00a0 The throat is reddish-purple, but for New Mexico Peterson\u2019s would suggest that only the broad-tailed hummingbird is likely.<\/p>\n

The spotted towhee was an exceptionally fun bird to see.\u00a0 My son thought it might be an oriole\u2014we\u2019ve been laboring to attract those too.\u00a0 He knew it was not a robin, describing it as having a \u201cblack head\u201d and \u201corange breast\u201d.\u00a0 Pretty good for a four-year-old.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever seen a towhee before.<\/p>\n

\"Spotted<\/a><\/p>\n

The white-winged dove is the most prevalent bird in our yard.\u00a0 They typically outnumber house sparrows and house finches.<\/p>\n

The roadrunner photo credit goes to my wife\u2014what a shot!\u00a0 A mating pair appear to be nesting in the hedge in our front yard.\u00a0 They are a shy bird, but their size and displays make for great entertaining.\u00a0 Like a dog\u2019s ears their topknot rises and flattens to indicate something of their state of mind.\u00a0 \"Greater<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
