{"id":287,"date":"2010-01-28T20:54:45","date_gmt":"2010-01-29T03:54:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/inkofpark.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/28\/paintshop-photo-pro-x3\/"},"modified":"2024-09-01T20:32:00","modified_gmt":"2024-09-02T02:32:00","slug":"paintshop-photo-pro-x3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.inkofpark.com\/?p=287","title":{"rendered":"PaintShop Photo Pro X3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The latest version of Corel Paint Shop Pro is now apparently called PaintShop Photo Pro X3.\u00a0 Perhaps they\u2019ll eventually regret their ridiculous naming.<\/p>\n<p>Many things are the same since the previous version.\u00a0 The obvious differences are that the menus have been re-colored to be higher contrast.\u00a0 I find it overdone and a little garish, but not a big deal overall.\u00a0 To me the old version (figure right) is easier to read.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.inkofpark.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/menucap.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display:inline;border:0;\" title=\"menu-cap\" alt=\"menu-cap\" src=\"http:\/\/www.inkofpark.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/menucap_thumb.png\" width=\"698\" height=\"270\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The single feature I wanted most from Photoshop\u2019s line was the vibrancy adjustment.\u00a0 Unlike Photoshop, PaintShop includes the vibrancy adjustment as a standard image operation (accessible through Adjust \u2013&gt; Hue and Saturation \u2013&gt; Vibrancy).\u00a0 This is considerably superior to Photoshop, which only includes it in the RAW import tool.\u00a0 The vibrancy adjustment works on 8 bit\/channel and 16 bit\/channel images like many of PaintShop\u2019s tools, in contrast to most of Photoshop Elements&#8217;.\u00a0 Corel could have done better though; I was disappointed that the vibrancy is not available as an adjustment layer.<\/p>\n<p>Corel upgraded the photo organization tools some, and there are distinct improvements.\u00a0 Like Picasa and Elements, photos can be grouped virtually into \u201cCollections\u201d.\u00a0 Other software may call them albums.\u00a0 The organizer does a passable job of including the EXIF and IPTC data.\u00a0 Captions in Picasa show up in the \u201cDescription\u201d IPTC field, rather than the \u201cCaption\u201d field, so moving between those two programs at least is a little bit of a pain.<\/p>\n<p>The tag editor is quite disappointing, as it does not appear to have any method of making common tags easily accessible\u2014which means typing \u201cAngus Hays\u201d for every picture that includes my dog Angus.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cemail picture\u201d capability did not improve in any important way&#8211;it is still just tied to the Windows MAPI system.\u00a0 Fine if you\u2019re brain damaged enough to use Outlook, but a complete failure for those of us in the Gmail crowd.<\/p>\n<p>The upload tools for interfacing to web services appear to be part of a different application called \u201cCorel PaintShop Photo Project Creator\u201d which rolls off the tongue.\u00a0 CPSPPC seems to be worthless, as it only interfaces to Facebook, flickr, and YouTube.\u00a0 There is no option to add plugins or support for Picasa, MPIX, or any of the other services I use regularly.\u00a0 CPSPPC provides tools to make backups, photo books, uploads, order online (only from Corel\u2019s affiliate, who is not named prior to upload, does not offer an ICC profile, etc.).\u00a0 Furthermore CPSPPC does not include any of the Photo Organizer\u2019s tools for searching\u2014all the albums you created in PSP Organizer are useless if you want to use them in, for example, a photo book.\u00a0 Unbelievable, the project manager must be a drooling moron.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, Picasa offers services like that which are orders of magnitude better than Corel\u2019s or Adobe\u2019s\u2014it is really the photo editing tools that I care about.\u00a0 It is worthwhile to know that Corel is still ranked third in class on photo organization.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted Corel to include an \u201cOut of Gamut\u201d display to help with color management, and that is sadly missing.\u00a0 They did not appear to have changed anything about their color management processing at all, it is still basically OK but not exactly mind blowing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The latest version of Corel Paint Shop Pro is now apparently called PaintShop Photo Pro X3.\u00a0 Perhaps they\u2019ll eventually regret their ridiculous naming.
